Unveiling the Magic of BBQ: An Inside Look at the Lolo, Captain's Rib Shack

Overview

Captain's Rib Shack is a classic "Lolo" style restaurant that serves up an array of delectable barbecued delights. This rustic, outdoor eatery is a must-visit spot for those seeking authentic, Caribbean BBQ flavors in a relaxed and traditional setting. This gem of a spot is a favorite amongst locals and tourists alike, including my brother who never fails to visit when on the island. The best part? You can enjoy a hearty meal and a beer for less than $25.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere at Captain's Rib Shack is quintessentially "Lolo." For those unfamiliar with the term, a "Lolo" is an open-air barbecue stand, a local institution on both the Dutch and French sides of SXM. At Captain's Rib Shack, you can expect to find yourself seated on picnic tables, enveloped by the enticing aroma of grilling meats and seafood right next to the Caribbean Sea. The restaurant is small and traditional, roughly 300 square feet, with an open kitchen and tables arranged next to the cooking area. Despite its simplicity, there's a certain charm about the place that makes you feel instantly like a local.

Food

The food at Captain's Rib Shack is all about the BBQ. Whether it's ribs, chicken, or shrimp, each dish is prepared with care and served piping hot. However, be prepared to wait a bit depending on what you order as grilling good food takes time. The chicken is a personal favorite of mine, perfectly seasoned and grilled to perfection. As for the curry shrimp, it's a delightful surprise that's equally tasty. My brother, a rib connoisseur, swears by their ribs and rarely orders anything else.

Cocktails & Wine

The drink selection at Captain's Rib Shack is limited but fitting for its beachy Lolo ambiance. They serve a few simple, beach-style cocktails that are perfect for sipping as you wait for your food. Wine enthusiasts may be disappointed as the wine selection isn't extensive. However, the laid-back vibe of the place more than makes up for it. After all, there's nothing quite like enjoying a chilled beer with your BBQ under the open sky.
